Round 4 - both team lost

Open Section

After tying the strong Lithuanian team in the previous round, the men team was ready to face their 4th round opponent - Switzerland which Malaysia beat 2.5-1.5 in Turin 2006. However the Swiss got their revenge last night when they beat Malaysia 3-1. Only board 1 (Mashafizul) and board 4 (Peter Long) managed to draw while Mok Tze Meng (board 2) and board 4 (Tan Khai Boon) was well beaten by their opponent.

There was an interesting moment last night which occur on board 1. Mashafizul is an exchange up in the endgame against GM Yannick Pelleteir. However the endings in not that easy to convert and probably it is theoretically draw. More about the game here.

Women

Our women team suffered a shock when they are beaten 1-3 against a team which is seeded lower- Sri Lanka. My early prediction that our team will gain maximum points was proven wrong and i really underestimated the Sri Lanka capability. This lost must be hard to swallow but i wish they will bounced back in later rounds.
