Edward Lee (photo right) - Mohd Aizuddin Che Hassan [A08]

National Closed 2008 (8), 03.06.2008

1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 c5 3.Bg2 Nc6 4.0–0 e5 5.d3 f6 6.e4 d4 7.Nh4 Be6 8.f4 Bd6 9.fxe5 Nxe5 10.Nf5 Qd7 11.a4 g5 12.c3 h5 13.cxd4 cxd4 14.a5 h4 15.Qa4 Nc6 16.a6 Be5 17.axb7 Rb8 18.g4 h3 19.Bf3 Rh7 20.Nd2 Qc7 21.Rf2 Rxb7 22.Nf1 Rb3 23.Be2 Nh6 24.Bd1 Rb4 25.Qc2 Nxf5 26.gxf5 Bb3 27.Qe2 g4 28.Kh1 Rh4 29.Rb1 Ba2 30.Ra1 Bf7 31.Ba4 Rb6 32Bd2

32...Bh5? black should play 32...Kf8 releasing the pin on the knight at c6.33.Ng3!+- A brilliant move. The knight block black's g pawn from advancing. Probably black is expecting 33.Ba5? which will be answered by the strong 33...g3! 33...Bf7 Black lost a tempo. Now if black play 33...Bxg3 34.hxg3 and black rook on h4 is trapped and if black follow with 34...Qxg3 35.Bf4! Trapping the queen! 34.Ba5 Kf8 35.Bxb6 Qxb6 36.Bxc6 Qxc6 37.Qc2 Qd6 38.Rg1 Kg7 39.Qd2 Rh8 40.Ne2 Bh5 41.Nf4 Bxf4 42.Qxf4 Qxf4 43.Rxf4 Kh6 44.Rff1 Rb8 45.Rf2 Rb3 46.Rd2 Kg5 47.Rf1 Be8 48.Rg1 Bb5 49.Rg3 Kf4 50.Kg1 Rb4 51.Kf2 Ba4 52.Rg1 Bb5 53.Ra1 a6 54.Ke2 Rb3 55.Rg1 a5 56.Rg3 a4 57.Rg1

57...Bxd3+?? I'm not sure why black play this losing move. Probably he was in severe time pressure too. The correct move is 57...Kg5 And black should hold. 58.Rxd3+- Black simply a piece up! 58...Rxb2+ 59.Rd2 a3 60.Rxb2 axb2 61.Kd3 Ke5 62.Rb1 g3 63.hxg3 h2 64.Rh1 Kd6 65.Kxd4 Kc6 66.Kc3 Kd6 67.Kxb2 Ke5 68.Rxh2 Kxe4 69.Rf2 Ke3 1–0

Edward played well to win the game, however, I'm quite impressed with Mohd Aizuddin's style of play. Very refreshing to see a player take a lot of risks to win games. Well done to both the players.
