16th Iinternational FAJR Open Ourmia (3.19), 04.02.2008

1.c4 e5 This is often called the reverse-Sicilian. 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 The English Opening Four Knights Variation 4.e4 Bc5 5.Bd3 d6 6.Bc2 Bg4 7.h3 Bxf3 8.Qxf3 White has the pair of bishops 8...Nd4 Black threatens to win material: Nd4xf3. Menacing 9.Qd1 c6 10.0–0 h6 11.Na4 a5 12.Nxc5 dxc5 13.d3 g5 Mas play aggressively. 13...0–0 Would be more safer 14.Be3 Qd7 15.Qd2 b6 16.Ba4 Rc8 17.a3 Rg8 18.f3 Nh5 19.Rf2 19.b4 b5 20.Bd1 cxb4 21.axb4 a4 19...Nf4 it is clear that Mas pieces is dominating the position. 20.Bxd4?! It's hard to suggest any good move for white. Probably he should set a trap with 20.Bc2!? just in case Mas misplay the position with 20...Nxc2?! 21.Qxc2 Qxd3 22.Qxd3 Nxd3 23.Rd2 Nf4 24.Bxf4 gxf4 25.Rad1 When white have the initiative although he is a pawn down. 20...Qxd4 21.Rd1 21.Kh2!? 21...h5 22.Kh2 g4 23.fxg4 hxg4 24.g3 Nxh3 24...b5!? 25.Bb3 Nxh3 26.Rf5 Rh8 27.Kg2 25.Rf6? A miscalculation by white. 25.Rf5 Rh8 26.Kg2 25...Ng5!–+ 26.Kg2 26.Bxc6+?? the pawn contains a lethal dose of poison 26...Rxc6! Double attack: d2/h2 27.Rxc6 Nf3+ 28.Kg2 Nxd2 29.Rxd2 Rg6 30.Rxg6 fxg6–+ 26...b5! Deflection: c4 27.Bb3 27.cxb5 Qxa4 Deflectation. 27...Nf3 28.Qf2 Qxf2+ Mas missed a clear win with 28...Rh8! makes sure everything is clear 29.Qxd4 Rh2+ 30.Kf1 Nxd4–+ Because white will lost his bishop because if 31.Ba2 Rh1+ 32.Kf2 Rxd1 29.Kxf2 Ke7 29...Rh8!? might be the shorter path 30.Ke3 Rh2–+ 30.Rh6 Nd4 31.Ba2 b4 32.Rh5 Ke6 32...Rh8 33.Rh4 (33.Rxe5+?? the pawn must remain untouched 33...Kd6 34.Rf5 (34.Rg5 Rh2+ 35.Kf1 (35.Kg1 Nf3+ 36.Kf1 Nxg5) 35...Rh1+) 34...Rh2+ 35.Ke3 Nxf5+ 36.exf5 bxa3–+) 33...Rcg8 34.Bb1–+ 33.axb4 cxb4 34.b3 Ra8 35.c5 Rh8 36.Rhh1 a4! final destruction 37.bxa4+ b3 38.Bb1 Rxh1 39.Rxh1 Rxa4 40.Ke3 Ra5 41.Rc1 41.Rh6+ is still a small chance 41...Ke7 42.Rh5–+ 41...Ra1 42.Kd2 Nb5 43.d4 43.Rh1 is no salvation 43...Na3 44.Rh6+ f6–+ 43...exd4 44.Bd3 b2 45.Rb1 Rxb1 46.Bxb1 Na3 0–1
