Recently i done a so-called "research" from the internet, books and magazines regarding Malaysia chess histrory. Actually there is many important moments happens in Malaysia such as 1990 final world championship candidates' match between Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman in Kuala Lumpur but unfortunetly there is no proper information, photos whatsoever in this important moment . I hope my small initiative here could be share with others chess enthuist to properly record Malaysia chess history for our own knowledge and perharps for younger generations.
So far my main resources is from Penang Chess Association Website - the lovely and fascinating website from Malaysia chess history point of view. The history information, photos supplied by Malaysia famous chess person Quah Seng Sun in this website and another great sources - his Online Chess Column in The Star was unbelieveable. I also done some random research in the internet and i hope that anyone that intersted to share, add and correct! this work, you are always welcome. There is a few information that is not clear were written in red.
Early Malay chess set found in Selangor I read two theory about the origins of chess in Malaysia. The first theory by H.J.R. Murray in his voluminous work, A History of Chess, mention that chess came from India where as the second theory by (Chien Chun Ching, "Research in Chinese chess from the Tang and Song Dynasties", p. 86, Hong Kong, 1984 (in Chinese) - said that chess came from China through Burma, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. From there it reached Thailand and Malaysia and crossed to the island of Java in Indonesia, where chess relics have been found. (Chien Chun Ching, "Research in Chinese chess from the Tang and Song Dynasties", p. 86, Hong Kong, 1984 (in Chinese). Although Chinese chess itself is still played in Vietnam, other variations of the game took hold in most of the other countries. Some of these have now died out or, as in the case of Malaysian chess, have been radically modified in recent times so as to conform more closely to the rules of modern western chess. "The game of chess as played by people dwelling in the |Malay Peninsula is, as would be expected, the same as that of their close neighbors and co-religionists of Sumatra and Java. Malayan names of the piece are derived from Persian and although much chess is played throughout the Peninsula, no chessmen of any great merit have originated there. There is no recognized traditional type of chess piece associated with Malaya, but simple playing pieces based on Muslim sets were made from nineteenth century onwards. This simple sets were turned to similar Muslim design but with straight- sided diabolo forms surmounted by oviform finials. One side was stained or dyed either red or green and the material used was either Malayan ivory or softwood. They were used before the nineteenth century and are still played with today using the same design. The bishop are 13/4 in (4.5cm) high and the Pawns 7/8 in (2.2cm) high."
7th c AD - Located on the maritime roads linking China and Japan to India and Persia, the Malay islands and peninsula have been influenced by a deep and strong Indian influence before the islamisation, since the 7th c AD. Those people adopted Buddhism and Hinduism and rules mighty empires like the Çailendra at Java from 7th to 12th c. which built Borobudur temple, Çrivijaya at Sumatra from 8th to 13th c., and Majapahit in the 14th c.

Malay Island probably took Chess as well from Indians. Chess is attested there since the first European (Portuguese) contacts at the beginning of the 16th c. and seemed already well known when it happened. However, the game was later on deeply influenced by the European play. For instance, the modern moves for the Queen and the Bishop were adopted.
Main means "game" and Chator is obviously "chess", as a broken form of Sanskrit Chaturanga. The Malay name of the pieces also come from Sanskrit (Raja, Mantri, Gajah) or from Tamil and Telegu, Dravidian languages from South East India (Kuda, Ter, Chemor). The only exception is Bidaq which obviously is inherited from Muslim contacts (Baidaq in Arabic).
My personal opinion is in the past, the game was once called chator or catur but not "main" chator/ catur because in Malay, main is and adjective while chator/catur is a noun. - Hairulov
Two kinds of sets exists. One very basic, carved in 10 mn from bamboo or other vegetals with abstract shapes, the other is finely carved. Interestingly, the Rook is represented by a Boat there, like in certain parts of India and in Burma. It probably denotes the Hindu influence, a common character with Thailand and Cambodia where Boat is name of the piece.

Tun Bahara his name and he is from Pasai (Indonesia) came to Malacca. He was a strong chess player and no players can match him at that time. He played with many players from Malacca but all lost to him but there's one player - Tun Pikrama who offered strong resistance against him. However Tun Pikrama also failed to match Tun Bahara especially when Tun Pikrama is not concentrated on the game and even Tun Bahara can give and odd ( playing with one pawn less) and still won the game.

1935 or is it 1933 ? - Xie Xiashun, nick-named "Centurian chess king" because at 100 years old, he was a strong player in all the three forms of chess. Xie, not related to former women's world champion Xie Jun, helped to promote the game and was the top player in China after the 2nd World War. In 1935, he visited Malaya and Singapore and defeated their champion as well as the British Air Forces champion Hunter.

1955 - Malayan championship was held at the Selangor Chinese Recreation Club in Kuala Lumpur from 8–10 April. Among the participants are Bock Jam Loon (Kuala Lumpur champion), Tay Kheng Hong, Lim Kok Ann, Elaine and David Pritchard. The event was won by David Pritchard after he scored against Elaine in a 7-hour game in the last day of the competition. In a field of 10 players, he was followed by Lim Kok Ann and Elaine Pritchard (former British Ladies Champion) , Lee Chai Seng, and Foo Lum Choon.

1956 - Malayan championship was held in March/April 1956 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. 12 players (Low Seow Meng, M. Yassin, Tay Cheong Ann, M. Davis, John.C. Hickey, Tay Kheng Hong, N.G. Singh, Tan Kah Hong, Raja Othman, Foo Lum Choon, A. Subramaniam, and Grundy) participate in this event. The championship was won by Michael Davis, followed by the Kuala Lumpur-based 15-year-old Subramaniam and Low Seow Meng.

1972 - Malaysian Team particapted in the 20th Chess Olympiad at Skopje, Yugoslavia. The first ever since the initiation of the Chess Olympiad!
1972 - April 1972 the President of the International Chess Federation, Professor Max Euwe was in Kuala Lumpur, and five students from Penang were selected to participate in a simultaneous match against him.
MSSM Chess started in December 1972. It was initiated after a visit by then President of FIDE Max Euwe (ex- World Chess Champion) to Tun Hussein Onn. Former world champion Euwe conducted a 25 board simul held in St John's Institution against schoolboys from different states.

1973 in 1973 or so, there was a weekly programme on RTM1 to teach chess to beginners. The presenter was High Court Judge Dato' Annuar (is it Y.A. Dato’ Anuar Bin Dato’ Zainal Abidin ? ) who was the president of the Perak Chess Association.

1974- The Penang Chess Association had the honour to assist the Malaysian Chess Federation organise the First Asian Team Chess Championship from 9-21 Dec 1974 at the Penang Conference Hall . This event was organised concurrently with the Golden Jubilee (50 years)celebration of the World Chess Federation which held its Bureau Meeting here. Dato Tan Chin Nam, then President of the reorganized Malaysian Chess Federation invited China to attend the 1st Asian Team Championship with observer status.
Eight teams from Zone 9 participated in this event . The final result is Philippines
(22½), Australia (22), Indonesia (19½), Singapore (17, 1/2) New Zealand (10½),
Japan (8½), Hong Kong (8½) and Malaysia (3).

1974 Choo Min Wang won the 1st National Closed Championship held at the FAS building in Kuala Lumpur.
1974- at the invitation of the Malaysian business tycoon Dato Tan Chin Nam, then President of the reorganized Malaysian Chess Federation, China was invited to attend the 1st Asian Team Championship with observer status. It was also in 1974 that China held its first National Championship tournament. The first international tournament ever held in China was in 1980.

1974 - a seminal meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur that was attended by Malaysian Chess Association President Dato Tan Chin Nam, a prominent businessman; Lim Kok Ann, then President of the Singapore Chess Association; President of the Japanese Chess Association Yasuji Matsumoto; FIDE and Philippine Chess Federation President, Florencio Campomanes and two observers from the Chinese Embassy. He said, "I am behind the cause of chess in China for my whole lifetime. And after me, my children will carry on." 1985 Audrey Wong Su Yi (right) , MAS was the winner of the Asian Girls U-20 1985 Championship. She was Malaysian first Woman International Master (WIM). Back in June 1985, Wong was in uncharted waters when she set out for Adelaide, Australia. As the national women’s champion then, she represented the country at the Asian under-20 girls’ chess championship. It was a 13-round event with chess players from around Asia taking part. Wong astounded the field with a flying start that saw her score a perfect 10. Ten points from the first 10 games. She was on course to win the championship. However, she then faltered and, eventually, finished the tournament with 11.5 points.
Another player – Abhyankar Anupama from India – also scored 11.5 points.
Both players tied for first place in the tournament.
Florencio Campomanes – who was then the Fide president – decided that both players would be the co-champions and be given the titles. That’s how Wong returned to Malaysia triumphantly with her WIM title.

Chess is omitted from Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) calendar for the first time till 2004 when it made a come back after 7 years of hiatus.
1998 UKRAINIAN grandmaster Alexander Onischuk won the fourth Tan Chin Nam (Dato')grandmaster tournament that took place in Beijing from June 8 to 18.
This Category 12 event had a prize fund of US$16,000 and Onischuk took the first prize of US$5,000 with a score of 7 1/2 points from 11 games.

2002 The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) organised the World Youth Olympiad (U16), which was on that year open to players born in 1986 or later. Some nations fielded two teams (China, Singapore, Hong Kong) and some three (Australia, Malaysia). Following the last-minute withdrawal of Zambia, Malaysia has added a fourth team in order to even out the numbers. The tournament was declared open by Kirsan Ilumzhinov. Following a speech to the assembled players and officials, Ilumzhinov made a symbolic first move (e4) on an extremely large chess set installed in the centre of the hall.

2002 ex Malaysian chess coach the legendary Gorgeian GM Eduard Gufeld (photo right) died. He died on
September 23, 2002 at He was born in the Ukraine on 19 March 1936. In the late 1950s had established himself as one of the strongest players in the world, defeating Tal, Spassky, Smyslov, Korchnoi, Bronstein, and just about ever other strong Soviet player. Asean Chess Academy Pte Ltd has opened its first regional branch, in Malaysia. This event gathered together the Russian Embassy staff, “Russian Club” members to the RCSC, Malaysian top chess players, and traditional participants of regional and national tournaments. 2009 - Evan Capel (Penang) win the 2009 National Closed which was held from 30th May - 3rd June 2009 at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur. In the women section, 12 years old - Tan Li Ting emerged as the champion. News is here
2010 Singapore win the 2010 Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challange ( Dato Tan Kim Yeow Trophy) by a point margin - 76.5-75.5. The tournament was held in Citytel Express, (at Chow Kit Road) , KL from 15th-17th February 2010 ( During Chinese New year!?). There was 4 rounds with two classical time control and two rapid. The Singapore now lead the annual match which started in 1985 ( 10-9).
2010 - National (Open) and (Women) Championship was held and organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 18-20 June 2010.
Tan Khai Boon and Fong Mi Yen win the 2010 Open and Women National Championship respectively. Penangite - Tan Khai Boon won the open section with 8 points from 9 rounds. He lost the first round against Kedahan - Amri Hajar but Khai Boon never turn back by winning the remaining rounds. Win this victory, Tan Khai Boon received the National Master (NM) title.
National Master (NM) Tan Khai Boon received the Tun Hussein Onn Trophy from the President of Malaysian Chess Federation - Tan Seri Dato' Seri Diraja Ramli bin Ngah Talib.
Perakian - Fong Mi Yen finish with 7.5 points out of 9 rounds in the women section. She won seven games and only lost to Amira Syahmina Zulkafli in round 6 and draw against Camilia Johari in the final round to clinch the National Women Master (NWM) title .
National Women Master (NWM) Fong Mi Yen received the Tan Sri Sabbaruddin Chick Trophy from Ketua PALAPES UKM - Encik Abdul Rahim.

Kuala Lumpur repeat their last two years victory and by doing so they
create history by winning it three time in a row ( 2010, 2011 and 2012).
Second to fourth place is won by Terengganu (2nd) , Johor (3rd) and
Sarawak (4th).

Championships at 2ND FLOOR, WILAYAH COMPLEX, KUALA LUMPUR from 12th March 2014

2016 - The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) organized The 2016 Malaysian Championship ((formerly known as National Closed)) at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 16th March 2016 to 20th March 2016.
FM Yeoh Li Tian and WCM Nur Nabila Azman won the Open and Women title respectively. They won the tournament for the second time in a row ( 2015-2016).

The 42nd instalment of the prestigious competition which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 1 till 14 September, saw the girls emerging as winners of Group C in the Women's Category.

2017 - Sarawak win the 2017 chess team event at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom, Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 20-22 January 2017 - at Stadium Tertutup Titiwangsa , Kuala Lumpur . This year event is host by MAKSWIP. This year event saw the introduction of the individual women chess category. The individual women chess category winner is WNM Nurul Huda Wahiduddin from MAKSAK Pahang .

2018 - Malaysia won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the 19th Asean University Games (AUG) Championship at Myanmar's Nay Pyi Taw. The teams successfully passed the one gold medal medal target set by the Malaysian contingent before the tournament. Medal of the overall Chess Malaysia medal in the challenge of the Asean University Games (AUG) 2018:

2019 - The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) and Persatuan Catur Pahang (PCP) organized The 2019 Malaysian Championship at Grand Continental Hotel, Jalan Gambut, Kuantan, Pahang from 29th June - 3rd July 2019. The first date was 25th- 30th May 2019 but it has to be postponed to a new date as a mark of respect on the recent passing away of Paduka Ayahanda Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah Al Musta’in Billah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar on 22th May 2019. In view of the Pahang Palace close relationship with the Pahang chess community, the Malaysian Chess Federation and the Persatuan Catur Negeri Pahang as the organizer of the event, has agreed to postpone The Malaysian Chess Championship 2019 to start on Wednesday, 29th May 2019 with Kuantan, Pahang and Grand Continental Hotel to remain as its venue.

NM Kamal Abdullah and Puteri Munajah Az- Zahraa binti Azhar won the Open and Women title respectively. This was the 3rd time NM Kamal Abdullah won the national championship. Previously he has won the 1988 and 1989 edition.
2019 - Johor win the 2019 chess team event at the Kejohanan Catur, Dart dan Karom, Majlis Sukan dan Kebajikan Anggota-Anggota Kerajaan (MAKSAK) held from 28-30 June 2019 - at Dewan Wawasan 2020 , Kangar, Perlis. This is the second time Johor won this event and also the first outside Johor. They last won it in 2013 when the event was held in Johor Bharu, Johor. There's no women individual category but the women player/board is included in the team event. This year event is host by MAKSAK Perlis.

Photo from Muhammad Arshad 2019 - Malaysian welcome our new WIM - Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa binti Azhar who won the Girls Under 16&18 category at the 4th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship in Bangkok today. She won with 7.5 points out of 9 round. Munajjah become Malaysian 3rd WIM after WIM Audrey Wong Su Yi and WIM Siti Zulaikha Foudzi - both has retired from tournament play. Full results is here

The 4th board for the 1988 Olympiad team was Ng Ek Leong and not Ng Ee Vern. He won the board prize (gold) for his performance.
