IM Mashafizul play in the 16th Fajr International Chess Open Tournament in Iran ( February 2 - 10, 2008) !

I found that Malaysian IM Mashafizul Helmi (right) will be playing in the 16th Fajr International Chess Open Tournament in Orumiyeh , Iran held from February 2 - 10, 2008. Orumiyeh is a district and a city located in northwestern Iran.

The tournament will be played in 11 rounds using the Swiss System. The time control is 90 minutes for the whole game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.
The total prizes would be US$18,000 in cash prizes with the 1st place earn US$ 3500.

Many strong players compete in this tournaments. 31 title players ( 7 GM, 16 IM and 8 FM) participate. Among the players is top seed GM Levan Pantsulaia, Ghaem Maghami Ehsan and Vladimir Malaniuk But the most interesting players for me is GM Kasparov! yes i'm not joking, Kasparov played in this tournament. The full name of the player is Sergey Kasparov (2458) - a GM from Belarus!

GM Sergey Kasparov played in Fajr 2008!

This would be another attempts for Mas who was going to have another shot on his GM quest. As inspiration, Mas could follow Aussie new GM, Zong-Yuan Zhao (left) who recently became the third Australian grandmaster. The 21-year-old Australian only needed one and a half month to do so. Read Zong story here

Update! So far IM Mas have score full points after 2 rounds. He won against unrated - Iranian Alireza Baharirad in the 1st round and his second victim in the 2nd round is Iranian - Babak Sedghi (2048). In the 3rd round which we schedule today, he will meet another Iranian M Sadegh Mahmoody .
