Iran Dominate GACC 2008 !

The Iranian contingent swept all the major prize in the 13th Rakan Muda Intervasity GACC 2008 which concluded at the University of Malaya today.

Iranian - GM Amir Bagheri emerged as the individual champion in the open category and the 2nd and 3rd place also won by the Iranian - GM Shojate Ghane and Amir Nasri respectively. Pok Wern Jian is the best Malaysian finisher ( 9th place) followed by NM Zarul Shazwan ( 10th place) .

In the women category, WFM Shirin Navabi is crown as the champion followed by India WFM Ramya, Krishna I. Malaysian best woman finisher is won by WCM Nur Shazwani Zulkafli (4th place).

For the Malaysian players, the last round saw a dramatic finale between team IIUM and UM. In the end, UIA managed to be the best Malaysia team edging the UM with only half points! The most important and the most thrilling game is in table 8 where Ahmad Fadzil Nayan create an upset by beating WIM Gong Qianyun .

Fadzil Nayan (right) beat WIM Gong Qianyun (left) in the last round !

Fadzil Nayan - WIM Gong Qianyun [A81]
GACC 2008, Round 9, 5.12.2008

Below is the critical position i witness during the game. Fadzil is two pawn down and he can't afford to play passively because black passed pawn ( b and c pawn) will roll down.

Unfortunately i 'm not sure what Fadzil play but i thought Bf6 is the obvious reply and i think it's more pleasant to be white because black king is an open target compare to white king which is much safer. In the end Fadzil won the game .

Thanks to Andrew Ooi, i got the correct move.

Fadzil in fact choose 33.Ng5 the game continued with 33...Bc4 34.Bf6 Ne2+ 35.Kh1 Qh6+ 36.Bh3 Bc3?? A terrible blunder 37. Qe8+ and black resign because it's mate in 2 after 37...Qf8 38.Qg6+ Qg7 39.Qxg7# 1–0
