Rizal - Gerald Soh Round 7, MASUM 2008 !

Rizal Ahmad Kamal (photo right) is kind
enough to send to me his annotated game against the 2008 Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia (MASUM) 2008 champion - Gerald Soh (photo left) . The Sukan MASUM 2008 was held at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently. The Rizal - Gerald Soh game in round 7 ended in a draw as Rizal miss several chances to win the game and the gold medal. However he did won the bronze medal.

Below is a brief analyzed game from Rizal Ahmad Kamal.

Chess Discussion With Zaidan!

 Zaidan

This evening Zaidan and i spent about an hour discussing about endgame theory at Putrajaya Precint 9 Food Court. Zaidan shows me some basic endgame position like key squares and also some unusual and interesting endgame tips such as queen vs bishop&knight and queen vs rook &pawn. For example, he show me an interesting endgame theory :-

Queen vs Rook + pawn

1.Rg3 Ke4 2.Re3+ The rook just move between the square (e3 and g3) protected by the pawn. 2...Kf4 3.Rg3 Qc6+ 4.Kg1 The king stay near the pawn and black can't make any significant progress ½–½

This is a drawn endgame because white can build a fortress which the side with the queen can't do anything if (i) the rook and king stay together and near to each other , (ii) the pawn remain on the 2 rank. At my home i do some checking by referring to my endgame book- Fundamental Chess Endings by Karsten Muller and Frank Lamprecht . The book mentioned that in this type of endgame :-

"A pawn on its second rank draws if it is not a rook's pawn and the defending king and rook are next to it" because no encirclement by the attacking king is possible!

As i mentioned in my previous post, Zaidan is a medical student in National University of Ireland, Galway . He is having a few months semester break. After the discussion we chat about chess especially his preparation for the coming 2008 National Closed which will start this coming Saturday. I was quite surprised when he ask me for some advice. I said to him " don't give up"and tell him my bad experience playing in National Closed 1997 when i lost 3 out of 4 early round and only collect 1/2 points . After round 4 i just walk over from the tournament after feeling so depress and quite chess for almost a years. The amazing think is after leaving chess for quite a long time, i return back ( without any preparation!) and won my first game in a serious team tournament (Sabarudin Chik Team Tournament organized by International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) at the Wetworld Hotel, Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, against NM Kamal Ariffin.

The morale of the story i told him is don't push yourself too hard and take it easy... if the result doesn't go your way...just be objective and don't scold yourself ....sound like a loser advice :) but i think he appreciate it.

Missing In Action : Abdul Haq (whitenaval) !?

Did you noticed that one local chess player/webmaster is missing in action (M.I.A)! He’s quite active playing tournaments and updating blog last year and early this year but a few months ago he simply gone missing from local chess scence. The person i refer to is Abdul Haq or whitenaval.

Whitenaval has create termendous Malaysian online chess network a few months ago which contain chess related info, blog, photo and videos. It attract quite a large number of members but suddenly the site is inactive around March this year.
Anybody knows where this fellow gone? Is he quiting chess ? I hope not...

Collin Madhavan In The News Again!

Yesterday, Susan Polgar post an article in his famous blog about Malaysian Chess Master Collin Madhavan (photo right) record breaking in Seremban where he recently played a simultenous chess display against 88 players. Susan refer The Star as his source of information about Collin record breaking.

About the simul event, I did received an e-mail from Collin himself. Here are some details and interesting facts about the match:

The final score was 54 wins, 26 draws and 8 losses(76% playing record).

Participants included:

- 2 FIDE rated players, Pok Wern Jian (2126) & Kamar Dani (1664)

- All 36 MSSM (Negeri Sembilan) players and a few teachers

- A number of former state players members of the public

Only 1 drawback for Collin:* They are short of officials during the match. Midway through the match, only 1 official to control the players. There was a lot of consultation and coaching among the players, which rather unfair to him ):

Other interesting facts:-

State teams initially had to return to their training camp by 2 pm, and so many draws were offered to their players (though I was better in most of them).

A decision was then made by the teachers to stay longer as most of the players wanted to stay back and play on!!

- Collin drink orange juice throughout the match (inspired by GM Susan Polgar)

- did not eat at all during the match

- walked around without shoes (in socks, of course)

- Duration: 8 hours (Started 9.30am: Ended 5.25 pm)

- Longest game: 49 moves - walked about 7,900 steps (estimate)

- Average time per player 5.45 minutes per games (like a blitz game)By the way, at the end of the match, Collin did not feel tired and could have played on a few more hours!!(Ha).

It was a BIG day for Chess in Negeri Sembilan.

You can read my previous post regarding the simul here

IM Mashafizul finish at 10th in The 1st Subic International Open 2008!

At last the official site of the first Subic Bay International Open Chess Championship 2008 produce the official final ranking. The interesting thing is our local hero IM Mashafizul is on 10 th placing! Congratulation Mas.

As my previous posting, I roughly calculated that Mas (photo right) will finish between 6th – 20th placing because there is 20 players with the same point ( 5 ½ ). However I don’t actually expect that Mas will place as high as 10th place because his initial seeding is 26th. Although Mas is unlikely to achieve GM norm in this tournament I think he should get a few rating point. He also will be more confident in his future tournament especially after beating GM like Rogelio Antonio and drawing with several strong IM’s.

National Closed 2003 Revisited!

As we all know, 2008 National Closed will be held from 31st May - 4th June 2008 at the Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur. To build up the mood for the tournament, i went trough the past games collections of the past edition. One of the game that attract my attention is the final round game (round 9) of the 2003 National Closed edition between the top board Nicholas Chan and Lim Yee Weng.

The game is won by Nicholas Chan and as a result, he tied with Wong Zi Jing who collected the same points. (7.5) Both play 2 play 0ff game and Nicholas won both of it to emerged as the new National Master.

Nicholas Chan - Lim Yee Weng [D44]
National Closed 2003 (9), 08.06.2003

1.d4 e6 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bg5 c6 5.Nf3 dxc4 6.e4 b5 7.a4 Qb6 8.Bxf6 gxf6 9.Be2 Bb7 10.0–0 Bb4 11.Qd2 Nd7 12.Qh6 a6 13.Qg7 Ke7 14.Rfd1 Bxc3 15.bxc3 Qc7 16.axb5 Qf4 17.g3 Rag8??

17...Qxe4 is probably the correct move and black should have the better game 18.Qxh8 black resign 1-0 Probably exhausted at the end of the tournament, Yee Weng maybe only consider 18.gxf4 Rxg7+ 19.Kf1

Chess is cruel for he… or……..she!

The drama happen at 1 minutes and 9 seconds

Watch IM Irina Krush reaction after losing the 2008 US Women Championship penultimate play-off game against Anna Zatonskih. Both tie with the same points in the woman category so they have to play blitz play-off games to decided the ultimate Champion. At the end, Anna won the play-off after winning the final game on time. Irina Krush was so upset with the result and she react horribly!

This is the first time ever I watch a women was so upset after losing a game. Irina even throw her king off the table (photo above) after she found that she just lost on time and her opponent has only 1 second left!!! - Watch the video at 1 minutes 9 second for the incident.

Irina instantly storm out from the playing hall without shaking her opponent hand.

Mustapa Kamal Wedding and “Grandmaster Live”

From left: Zambri, Sam, Mus & Wife, Aziz Shukor, Kamaluddin and Saprin (answering chess call !?)
Photo from Sam
As my previous article a few days ago, Mustapaha Kamal wedding ceremonies was successfully held at his house in on Sunday, 18 May 2008, at Taman Seri Setia, Teluk Intan.

Several chess players and his good friends attend the wedding, among them is Sam , Mohd Saprin Sabri, Zambri Yusof, Abdul Aziz Shukor and Kamaluddin Yusof. They came all they way from KL and stop a few time for food, drinks and ….blitz!!! We call this “ Grandmaster live”

This term were used by us during our students time when we have all time in the world to play chess- no wife, childrens, works, responsibility to think accept play, play and play chess where ever you are.

I recall one of my memorable experience in late 90’s when I with my chess buddies ( Irwan, Rizal, Abu Zarim..) went to play in Terengganu
Open held at the 4 star Hotel Primula Park Royal Kuala Terengganu. At that time we are all university students and don’t have much money ( now also :)) to pay the expensive room fee . So we plan a strategy. Although at that time my strength is good enough to play in the Open, I choose to played in the novis where as all my friends play in the open category. My job is to win a good price money in the novice and others tried their luck on the Open which of course- offer more cash price!

At the end, our mission is accomplish, I managed to get 3rd places where as my other friend failed to get any cash price in the strong Open category which won by Julian Navaratnam! So, the money I won were used to pay our room fees and we happily enjoy our stay at the beautiful hotel near the beach.

Another interesting story at the Terengganu Open is our room is adjacent to WFM Angela Khegai (photo right) and another strong and cute Uzbekistan women players- WFM Irina Gorshkova (photo left) . At the middle of the night ( around 2 a.m) , we knocked their door to invite them for blitz game which was reject immedietly !!! – how crazy we are back then.

Sukan MASUM 2 Update : Day 1

My friend Rizal Ahmad Kamal (photo right) - playing for Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), kindly e-mail me his round 2 game of the Sukan MASUM 2 held today. As my previous report, the chess events is being play from 23-26 May 2006 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Below is Rizal email with his annotated game.
Today I played a classic Ruy Lopez Chigorin (transposed from anti-Marshall).

IM Mashafizul draw against IM Julio Catalino Sandorra in round 9!

Refering from Kristianus Liem Blog , IM Mashafizul draw his last round game against Philipino GM elect- IM Julio Catalino Sandorra. Mas end his campaign at The 3rd Philippine Open International Chess Tournament with 5 ½ points. His final ranking is still unavailable at this particular time. My rough calculation is Mas will end somewhere between 6th - 20th placing. Not bad i think because he was 26th seeded .

Mas draw against IM Irwanto Sadikin in round 6

IM Mas draw against Indonesian IM Irwanto Sadikin (2456) in the 6th round of The 3rd Philippine Open International Chess Tournament held at the La Legenda Hotel, Subic Bay Freeport, Olongapo City, Philipines today. With 4 points, he will meet Philipines IM John Paul Gomez (2464) (photo right) in round 7 today.

IM John Paul Gomez slowly but surely is establishing himself as a perennial candidate for Philipines national teams. John Paul’s strongest point is his father. Mr. Jun Gomez is a former official of the National Power Corp. who has completely dedicated himself to the chess career of his son. He serves as executive driver, constant companion, silent supporter, loud reveler, quick financier, training companion and in many more capacities. John Paul on his part has rewarded the efforts of the dad with dedicated chess study and constant improvement.

Zaidan
A few days ago i received a phone called from an unknown chess player from Putrajaya. He introduced himself as Zaidan and invite me for a chess sparring at Putrajaya. Zaidan is a student in one of University in Ireland. He is having a semester break and will spend a month here before going back to Ireland.

Today, after i finish my job at about 6pm , we play at Putrajaya Food Court (Precint 9) together with another chess player, Putrajaya Chess Champion - Muhammad Rizal Jusah . Zaidan is quite strong player, beating me 1-3 and Rizal 0-2 in blitz.
I ask him how he got my number, he said that he got to know me from my friend- Sam and from reading my blog :) . We also talk about chess in Ireland. He said that GM Alexander Baburin was the strongest player there and charge quite an expensive fee for chess lesson. I mentioned another Irish chess player - IM Mark Quinn and he said that Mark is a pianist and chess is only his part time...eeemmm quite a an interesting fact :I
We plan to have a chess disscusion probably tommorow and within this month before he went back to Ireland for his studies.

Kasparov Attack By Flying *&%$#

As we all know, former World Champion- Garry Kasparov has quit chess and involve with his new career - Politics. His success in politics is far from being proud off compare to his chess glory.
Furthermore, his politics activities is often disturb by Pro Kremlin demonstrator. The recent one as reported, Garry Kasparov was attack by a flying @#$%& in one of his politics events. (see video above)

In the past, his political activities has always interrupted by this kind of protester. (see photo below)

Mas win round 5!

IM Mashafizul (standing left) was back on track after beating Pinoy – Johnathan Tan (2220) in the 5th round of The 3rd Philippine Open International Chess Tournament held at the La Legenda Hotel, Subic Bay Freeport, Olongapo City, Philipines today. IM Mashafizul lost to GM Susanto Megaranto (revisited)!

IM Mashafizul excellent start was stop by Indonesian no.1 – GM Susanto Megaranto (2569) (photo right) who beat him in the 4th round of The 3rd Philippine Open International Chess Tournament held at the La Legenda Hotel, Subic Bay Freeport, Olongapo City, Philipines today. Mas will meet Filipino – Johnathan Tan (2220) in round 5 tommorow. Below are the game.

GM Susanto Megaranto (2567) - IM Mashafizul (2396) [B20]
3rd Philipines Open 2008, 19.05.2008

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.g3 e5 7.Nde2 b5 8.Bg2 Bb7 9.0–0 Nbd7 10.Bg5 h5 11.a3 Be7 12.Re1 Rc8 13.Nc1 Rc4 14.Nb3 Nc5 15.Bd2 Ne6 16.g4?

Quite a dubious move for patzer like me. At first i thought there's a mistake somewhere but after playing the whole game i can't find any mistake on the move order. So probably like legendary chess player- Tartakower famous quote ..."'If it's dubious, it's playable!" 16...h4 why not take the pawn with 16...gxh4? 17.Qe2 Ba8 18.Rad1 Qc7 19.h3 0–0 20.Bc1 Nh7 21.Be3 Bf6 22.Nd2 Nd4 23.Qd3 Ng5 24.f4 exf4 25.Bxf4 Nge6 26.Bh2 Nc5 27.Qf1 Rxc3 28.bxc3 Nxc2 29.Re2 Nxa3 30.Kh1 Re8 31.Qf4 Be5 32.Qe3 Bxh2 33.Kxh2

So far Mas has a large advantage in this quite imbalances position. The best continution probably is playing 33...Na4 attacking the c3 pawn and later maybe push his queenside pawn majority. However Mas ( probably in time pressure!?) choose a bad move with 33...Nxe4?? which unfortunately lost the game 34.Qf4! g5 35.Nxe4 gxf4 36.Nf6+ Kf8 37.Rxe8+ Kg7 38.g5 Kg6 39.Rg8+ Kf5 40.Bxa8 f3 41.Be4+ Ke5 42.Re8+ Kf4 43.Nd5+ 1-0

Mas beat GM Rogelio Antonio Jr !

Yes. Mas (photo right) has show his true potential by beating Philipines no. 3 - GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (2529) in the 3rd round of the 3rd Philipines Open today . Mas managed to take revenge from Antonio (photo left) who beat him in the 2nd Philipines Open recently. He will meet Indonesian no.1 – GM Susanto Megaranto (2569) in the 4th round and lets hope that Mas will continue his excellent form!
